Server-Side Tracking (SST)

Server-Side Tracking (SST) is a data collection methodology where tracking and analytics events are processed on a server rather than in the user's browser. Unlike traditional client-side tracking — where JavaScript tags fire in the browser and send data directly to third-party platforms like Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or TikTok — server-side tracking routes events through a first-party server endpoint before forwarding them to destination platforms. This architecture provides several significant advantages. First, it improves data quality and reliability because server-side events are not affected by ad blockers, browser privacy features (ITP, ETP), or JavaScript errors that commonly disrupt client-side tracking. Second, it enables first-party data collection because events are processed under the website's own domain, improving cookie persistence and data ownership. Third, it gives organizations more control over what data is shared with third-party platforms, enabling data minimization and consent enforcement at the server level. In the context of consent management, server-side tracking enables consent-aware event forwarding: the server checks the user's consent state before forwarding events to each platform, ensuring that only consented data reaches third-party services. Popular implementations include Google's server-side Google Tag Manager (sGTM), Meta Conversions API (CAPI), TikTok Events API, and Snapchat Conversions API. For MENA businesses, server-side tracking is increasingly important as ad blockers and browser privacy features reduce client-side tracking effectiveness. Arqam360's event pipeline forwards consent-aware events to 10+ platforms server-side, with routing rules that control data flow based on consent state, jurisdiction, and GPC signals.

Key Points

  • Events processed on server instead of browser, immune to ad blockers

  • First-party data collection with improved cookie persistence

  • Enables consent enforcement before data reaches third-party platforms

  • Platforms: sGTM, Meta CAPI, TikTok Events API, Snap CAPI
