A Consent Management Platform (CMP) is a technology solution that enables websites and applications to collect, manage, and store user consent for data processing activities including cookies, tracking scripts, and personal data collection. CMPs serve as the primary interface between a website and its visitors for privacy consent, typically presenting a consent banner or dialog when a user first visits a site. The CMP is responsible for several critical functions: displaying consent notices that comply with applicable privacy regulations (GDPR, PDPL, CCPA, etc.), recording the user's consent choices with proof of consent (timestamp, consent text shown, categories selected), communicating consent state to tracking technologies and advertising platforms, managing consent preferences over time (allowing users to change their choices), and maintaining an audit trail of all consent interactions. Modern CMPs integrate with advertising technology through standards like Google Consent Mode v2 and IAB Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) to communicate consent state to ad tech platforms in real time. Advanced CMPs go beyond basic cookie consent to include server-side event forwarding, script blocking and quarantine, auto-regime detection for multi-jurisdiction compliance, and integration with data subject access request (DSAR) workflows. For MENA businesses, a CMP must support Arabic RTL layouts, Saudi PDPL consent requirements, UAE PDPA compliance, and integration with regional e-commerce platforms like Salla and Shopify. The CMP market has grown significantly since GDPR enforcement in 2018, with Google's Consent Mode v2 requirement in 2024 making CMP adoption essential for any business running Google Ads in the EEA.
